Wealthy Amsterdammers discovered 't Gooi early on as a place for country estates. In Hilversum, the Boomberg villa park grew from around 1830; after the railway opened in 1874, bankers and industrialists had villas built on a larger scale, including on the new Trompenberg. From 1881 the Gooische Stoomtram connected the surrounding villages too. Around 1900, Laren drew an artists' colony that entered art history as the Larense School. That double legacy of old money and artists' village shapes the atmosphere to this day.
The five towns each have a tone of their own. Laren and Blaricum are village-like and private, with country houses behind hedges and a strong club life. Hilversum is the largest town in the region, with the Mediapark, Dudok's town hall and the widest choice of homes. Naarden has its star-shaped fortress, Bussum a lively village heart with direct trains to the city. What they share: the greenery isn't a park you go to, it's the surroundings themselves.
